Subungual Haematoma

Haven't start training for Seremban Half Marathon yet, mainly due to my subungual haematoma (bruise under the nail, also known as runner's nail in this case) sustained from Penang Bridge Marathon. Not sure if I'm gonna train at all, with impending exam stress and the painless purplish toe I'm having!

Unlike tridoc who's going to Lumphini Park this Friday for a highly specialised training with the hope of gunning it under 2hrs for Seremban Half (LOL!), I'm lying low nursing my bruised toe!

Consulted my orthopaedic surgeon, Prof. H this morning, as I was contemplating of draining the clotted blood by poking a heated needle through my toe nail (the standard treatment for subungual haematoma). He advised me against it, as my bruise is not huge and it is painless. Most importantly I wouldn't want any bacterial infestation by creating a hole on my toenail. And the complications of onycholysis and what nots. Will try jog a little tomorrow. See how it goes. The blistering hot weather doesn't help at all!

omg that looks like a nasty bruise... i had something like that once on my big toe and the entire nail dropped out soon after!

any prevention method? :)

Ugh, that is one nasty toe..

Even though I'm not medically trained, I'm almost tempted to stick a needle if I ever have such a toe.

It's normal rite? But i think it shouldn't take so long to heal rite...its a sign for you to rest and not to join the seremaban run...haha

celestine: hi there, tks for droppin by! looks like u had a nastier toe than mine! nail coming off, that's what the medical ppl call "onycholysis". if ur a runner, get a nice fittin shoe and never wear a new pair of socks (which i did in the Penang run) coz they're more slippery than seasoned socks! i'll be heading over to Contemporary Romantic Writings!, so c ya!

jonzz: that takes loads of courage (i chickened out last nite! LOL!). but unless the bruise is very huge and painful, it is best to let it heal by itself. creating a hole can relief the pressure fast and remove the unsightly purplish hue, but increases the chance of infection and droppin off of toe nail! u've been warned ya! :)

steve: having a barney-toe is of coz not normal, steve! resorption of the bruise may take weeks or months, so the quick way out is to bore a whole, which im not gonna do as i feel quite sexy with it, purplish and all! hahaha! anyway, did a slow 8km run earlier, no pain, so it's good!

since it's not painful, why didn't u start training? you're blaming your bruised toe just becoz you have a lazy arse right? muahaha!!

i actually had my nail problem while doing a stint waitressing. the only shoes i had that were suitable for the dress code of the restaurant was too wide and hard for wearing for long hours. il go clubbin in them straight afterwards as well so it was asking for it really. i was seriously shocked when i saw that after the toe healed, it never got back its old look and it looks deformed to me! :(
i used to hv such beautiful feet...
sorry for whining heh

rachel: maybe you're paying attention to something else more intently :P

zac: im afraid my nail bed wud avulse further if i were to run, causing my nail to drop off. but wat de heck, i did some slow 8km yesterday. and i felt some slight pressure on my toe today. bad sign!

celestine: dat explains everythin! a pair of shoes too wide with some back-breaking clubbing moves kicked in! haha! when nail bed heals, there are substantial amount of scarring dats why the deformity! poor toe! :)
